Foggy Morning

100_5577_edited-1This is what awaited me as I took off from VA yesterday. A foggy sunrise and clear evidence to me of the losing battle I’m waging with bugs.  Actually you could say I was winning, I’m pretty sure the smithereens caked on my windshield are all from "ex-bugs."  Aye, but at what cost?!  ;)

Picked up one backhoe in VA that morning, drove 300+ miles to GA to pickup another, praying like hell I could get in before they closed, otherwise I’d have to waste another 10-16 hours waiting for the morning.  I made it with a little time to spare and used that time to get my ass as far south in GA as I could before the clock ran out.

This morning I hauled butt to FL but ended up not being able to deliver today, they would already be closed by the time I got there.  So I’ll wait for the sunrise tomorrow and drive it in.  Otherwise My day has been pretty boring… except for the time I spilled a nearly full 64 oz. bladder buster drink onto the floor of my truck whilst doing 65 on the interstate.  Now I remember why I keep a roll of paper towels in my overhead bin at all times!

Being a flatbed driver, I deal with lots of places that are open 8 am to 4 pm (or somesuch), Monday through Friday and usually closed on weekends.  If you miss closing time, or you ended up where you had to be at over a weekend, you sit on your ass until the next time they open.  Much contrast from my days pulling a van trailer where you were dealing with folks who were open 24/7 and the only time you got to sit around was waiting to be loaded or unloaded during a live load. Then you drove as much as you could, grabbed a quick 10 hours (or as little as you could get away with) and got up and ran hard again.  That was the only way to make money pulling a van trailer, for me at least.

As far as Hours of Service rules go I had to keep tight track of my hours, I was working for a company that tracked your hours via the Qualcomm satellite thingy. My current company is not so bad at that but it’s not a big deal anyway.  See previous paragraph.  I spend at least one day on most weekends waiting for Monday to roll around but that gives me a chance to get a 34 hour break in to clean up my 70.

No load for tomorrow yet, unsurprisingly so.  FL is usually a hole you get sucked into with very few loads leading out.  I’m due home this weekend so it will be harder to get a load going in the right direction.  We’ll see how it goes…
